Medical Card

In April 2010 the HSE wrote to dentists and announced that the Medical Card now only covers the following:

1. One annual check-up
2. Two fillings
3. Extractions
4. Prescriptions
5. Denture repairs

Some treatment like dentures and root canal treatment may be approved, at the discretion of the HSE Principal Dental Surgeon. These include
(a) Medically compromised patients whose general health would be seriously compromised if they did not have essential dental treatment.
(b) Individuals with a disability, such as special needs patients.
(c) Hepatitis C patients with an R card.
(d) Haemophiliacs.
(e) Oral cancer patients.

You must be over 16. Patients under 16 are treated in the Health Board. The nearest Health Board clinic is on Roselawn Road in Castleknock ( Tel: 8212666 )
You must produce a valid full medical card or we will have to charge "private" fees. A parent’s card does not cover a child and we can not provide treatment under someone else’s card.

The HSE Orthodontic Service (braces) is based in St. James' Hospital ( Tel: 4733500 )
